Tropf means drip in German. This Blumat works as a moisture-sensing valve, opening and closing automatically based on soil moisture levels. All that’s required is a small amount of water pressure—just 1 PSI—with no electricity needed. A single Blumat can water up to a 5-gallon pot on its own, but for larger containers, it should be paired with a distribution method like drippers, drip rings, or BluSoak drip tape.
The Preset Tropf Blumat is a hand-calibrated sensor that takes the guesswork out of Blumat setup. No soil calibration required — just insert, set to your pressure range, and grow. Prep the sensors: Fill a container with cooled, non-aerated water. Separate the ceramic bottoms from the plastic tops and soak both for at least 15 minutes. While holding the green top underwater, use a pipette or your thumb to push water into the holes in the cap to displace any air bubbles. Hold both parts underwater, confirm no air remains, and reassemble while still submerged. Keep sensors submerged until ready to install. While sensors are soaking: Connect 8mm tubing to your reservoir or pressure reducer. Run the 8mm tubing to your plants. Installation: Water the garden again and push the sensor into the soil where you want moisture sensed. The ceramic cone must be fully covered and firmly anchored. Cut the 8mm tubing and insert the included 8x8x3mm tee. For the last sensor, use the elbow instead. Add a shut-off valve after the final sensor as an air/debris purge valve. Blumats Austria says "Please don't use the Tropf-Blumats indoors" because if hooked up to a constant water source and a pet, guest, or user-error somehow causes a run-away, it could damage an indoor floor, drywall, carpet, or furniture.
