The valve will remain closed 99% of the time, but should be opened if air/debris is suspected in the tubing. The air and/or debris will flow out of the tubing when the valve is opened. The second way to install a purge valve in a blumat watering system is by cutting in the middle of a "loop" design, installing a 3-way 8mm Tee fitting, and installing one of these valves on the open-end of the tee. Blumat 8mm Bulkhead

Tropf Blumat 5" Sensor - 1 Individual Sensor Bulk
The Tropf Blumat is a ceramic soil moisture sensor that automatically waters your plants at their own preferred rate — no timers, no electricity, no programming. Each sensor reads soil moisture and opens or closes water flow accordingly, letting every plant determine its own irrigation schedule. How It Works ＋ Each sensor is filled with water and voided of air before being connected to a supply line. The ceramic cone is the only point of contact with the soil. As the soil dries, it pulls moisture from inside the ceramic cone through osmotic pressure. Since the sensor is sealed, this creates a pressure differential that pulls on a plastic diaphragm inside the top of the sensor. The diaphragm opens the irrigation tube, allowing water to flow through gradually. Water is emitted and moisture is slowly restored to the surrounding soil. Once moisture equalizes, the pressure difference is relieved and the diaphragm closes the irrigation tube. The sensor resets and waits for the next dry cycle. The brown adjustment knob on top can be calibrated to specific plant types, strains, or growing media. Prep the sensors: Fill a container with cooled, non-aerated water. Separate the ceramic bottoms from the plastic tops and soak both for at least 15 minutes. While holding the green top underwater, use a pipette or your thumb to push water into the holes in the cap to displace any air bubbles. Hold both parts underwater, confirm no air remains, and reassemble while still submerged. Keep sensors submerged until ready to install. While sensors are soaking: Connect 8mm tubing to your reservoir or pressure reducer. Run the 8mm tubing to your plants. Installation: Water the garden again and push the sensor into the soil where you want moisture sensed. The ceramic cone must be fully covered and firmly anchored. Cut the 8mm tubing and insert the included 8x8x3mm tee. For the last sensor, use the elbow instead. Add a shut-off valve after the final sensor as an air/debris purge valve. Adjustment: Turn on water and open each sensor valve until flow is visible. Slowly tighten clockwise until a hanging drop is just achieved, then tighten two more triangles to calibrate to current moisture levels. *If using BluSoak drip tape, stop at the hanging drop — do not tighten the additional two triangles. The Tropf-Blumat Maxi acts as a regulator and dripper, just like the standard 5” Tropf-Blumat. This one is 9 inches long though. You put it in the ground 6 - 7.5 inches so it senses the moisture at a deeper level. This is important when your plants get bigger because the regular Blumat sensor might turn the water off too soon. This one might turn it off too soon if your plant still has surface roots. Some growers use both - especially if they are growing in coco or a hydroponic system. The Tropf-Blumat (Drip-Blumat) is a sensor that supplies plants with drips of water via thin tubing. As the soil dries, its natural suction power triggers the opening of the Tropf Blumat allowing the water to flow. When the soil is sufficiently moist, the Tropf Blumat automatically stops. The system functions fully automatically. Every plant, every container or group of plants requires at least 1 Tropf-Blumat adjusted to the individual needs of the plant. Larger containers or surfaces require longer or more than one sensor. All Tropf-Blumats are connected using one supply tube, this allows for flexibility in the layout and is changeable at any time. Blumat Distribution Drippers - bulk
Description Each Tropf Blumat can control 5 of these distribution drippers and saturate a 40" length - either in a row or around a large plant. In a pressure system, by adjusting the black screw, it's possible to do more than 5 but with a gravity system, usually better to stay with 2-3. If your plants and conditions are the same, you can also put one Tropf Blumat in the first pot with one distribution dripper and one or two in each plant after that. One customer reported doing this successfully with 25 distribution drippers running off just one Blumat sensor.

Blumat Distribution Drippers - End piece - Individual
Description Use these to end a Blumat distribution line. The regular distribution drippers have barbs on both sides so you need a way to end them without water dripping out too fast. You can do that with an end cap (IG15509) or with one of these. They are less expensive than the standard drippers and much easier to take on and off than the end caps. The end caps often need pliers to remove but they just pull on and off.

BluSoak to 8mm Barbed Adapter
Description Convenient fitting to attach BluSoak to 8mm Supply tubing. Simply lock the tape in by inserting it into the adapter, and twist the blue part clockwise to lock in the tape. Description Connect your Blu Carrot Soaker Hose to a 3mm Blumat line quickly and easily with this adapter.
