Blumat Gravity Garden Kit for 4' x 8' Raised Bed or 8 Large Plants
Description Blumat systems can adjust to any plant type or desired moisture level. This specific kit comes with 5" carrots, which are better for smaller potted plants (10 gallons at most). If you have large plants (10+ gallon pots), we recommend using 9" carrots, or Maxis, to get water deep into the soil. Automatically water a 4' x 8' raised bed with just a rain barrel or water reservoir (water reservoir not included; see our reservoirs here). Kit includes Blumat carrots for big plants in half the space and small, row crops in the other half - 4 x 4' for things like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, squash and 4 x 4' for things that grow closer together like carrots, lettuce, radish. Increase your yields and decrease grow times. Our fully-automatic, self-watering systems save time, water, and nutrients - and still ensure healthier, more potent, and faster-growing crops. This kit includes eight, 5" carrots and all the parts required for a gravity-fed system. Reservoirs should be at least 3' above ground-level. If your reservoir does not have a thru-hull installed, you will have to drill a hole into your reservoir bucket and install a thru-hull piece. For our customers' convenience, we also sell 5-gallon reservoirs with thru-hulls already installed. The Tropf Blumat system is great for watering balcony boxes, planters, hanging baskets, and row crops. It fulfills the needs of the plants on an individual basis, regardless of their location, light levels, or plant type. Our systems save your plants from excessive and improper watering. High capacity Blumat Classics - for tropical and larger plants that need more water. Take a vacation and let your plants look after themselves. Blumat Classics ensure a constant supply of water. They automatically supply just the right amount - never too much or not enough. Your plants will love it. They won't experience the drying out that stunts growth or the over-watering that squeezes the air out of the soil and keeps them from "breathing" properly. As the soil dries, the ceramic cone delivers water gradually into the surrounding earth - thereby creating a vacuum within the cone which draws water from the nearby container of water. Once the soil is moistened the Blumat Junior will cease flowing water. It waters your plants only as needed. You can even add fertilizer to the water supply. This slow, continual feeding encourages prolific growth. Blumat Classics will only draw water up 12 inches (30cm). If the surface of the water in your container is lower than this, the flow of water will be restricted and the plants gradually dry out. Each Blumat Classic has a limit on how fast it can deliver water. Several cones may be necessary for larger plants in order to meet the higher water needs. In this case, a larger reservoir of water must also be available. Instructions Fill a bowl with water. Remove the top of the Blumat Put both the top and ceramic cone into the bowl to soak for at least 15 minutes. Holding the cone and cap underwater, knock out the air bubbles in each piece and press the top on tightly. Push the ceramic cone completely into the soil. Extra large plants should be provided with two or three cones. Put the hose right to the bottom of a full container of water. Add a little liquid fertilizer if necessary. The level of water in the container should be level with or below the green cap. Raising or lowering the water container increases or reduces the flow rate. Maintenance Once a year, place the hose in hot water. Clean the inside of the ceramic cone with a brush and the outside with sandpaper or a pot scrubber type pad. Tips If you intend to be away from home for any length of time, ensure that the water container is large enough. Depending on type, size and season, a plant will require 1/4 to 1 litre (1 qt.) of water weekly. Delivery of water to the soil in the flower pots is automatic. If you do not refill the water container the Blumat will dry out. To restore the function, the Blumat Jr. must be refilled. (Follow steps 1-5).

Blumat 1/4" 4-Way Cross
Make cross connections in 1/4" line. You can use these to send distribution drippers in different directions rather than in a straight line. You can also use them as a more economical distribution method instead of using the drippers. Just cut equal lenghts of 1/4" tubing and spread them around. This requires more maintenance because roots can grow into the tubing but it does save some dollars. This would be our "Economy" design suggestion. The "Mid-Range" version would use the drippers and the "Deluxe" suggestion would be to use more Blumat carrots. This is more expensive but gives you redundancy rather than having all the eggs in one basket.

Foot Valve, 3/4"
Description Foot valves go into a reservoir or water tank and keep the input line full of water. They let the water come in but not out. This prevents the need to prime the pump or for the pump to work hard self-priming. Blumats don't like air in the lines and this prevents that. Without it, the water goes back into the reservoir each time the pump turns off and air goes in. If you install the bulkhead fitting on the side of the reservoir though and the pump lower than the water level, you won't need this. 3/4" female pipe thread.
