Installed in a growing container or a dedicated container of growing media. That container acts as the control point, regulating water delivery to the entire mat. Preset reference marks simplify initial adjustment.

Senses moisture directly at the capillary mat. It can stay in place while trays and containers change. Because placement can vary, it requires calibration during setup.
| Consideration | Preset 5" Sensor | Surface Blumat |
|---|---|---|
| Measures moisture | Growing media in a container | Directly at the mat |
| Installation | Planted or dedicated container | On or in the mat |
| Initial setup | Preset reference marks | Calibrate after installation |
| Changing containers | May require repositioning or reinstalling | Can remain installed |
| Permanent propagation tables | Works well | Especially convenient |
| Larger growing containers | Excellent choice | Also compatible |
Good to know: A Preset 5" sensor can also be installed in a dedicated, unplanted container of growing media, giving the mat a consistent control point.

Measures moisture in growing media inside a planted or dedicated container. Uses preset reference marks for setup.
Good for larger containers and fixed growing layouts. Moving pots may require repositioning or reinstalling the sensor.

A surface-mounted moisture-responsive option for capillary mat watering. Consider it when containers are moved frequently or a planted sensor location is impractical.
Tip: A Preset 5-inch sensor can also be installed in a dedicated, unplanted container of growing media to give the mat a consistent control point.
Water spreads across the AquaMat beneath your containers. Compatible pots take up moisture through their bottoms. The selected Blumat sensor regulates when water enters the mat.
When the sensor detects that moisture has fallen below its setting, it allows water into the AquaMAT.
Water spreads across the capillary surface, beneath the pots and trays sitting on it.
Compatible containers absorb water through their bottoms. The sensor regulates delivery as moisture conditions change.
Your kit includes the AquaMat capillary watering components for the size and Blumat sensor option you select. The exact parts and quantities vary by configuration, so check your selected kit's component listing. A water source, supply line and compatible growing containers are selected separately; the AquaMat kit is the distribution portion of the system, not a complete standalone irrigation setup.
Already have a suitable Blumat water source and supply line? You may only need the AquaMat kit and compatible containers. For a new installation, choose a water source and supply line separately.
Choose open-bottom or permeable-bottom containers that allow the growing media to contact the capillary mat.

Answers to common questions about mats, sensors, containers and water supplies.
AquaMat is a bottom-up irrigation distribution mat. Water spreads across its capillary surface and moves into compatible growing media through the bottoms of pots or trays. A Blumat moisture sensor regulates water entering the mat.
No. The kits on this page include the selected mat and Blumat control components. Compatible growing containers, the main supply line and a water source are chosen separately unless you already own suitable components.
Choose the size that fits the usable growing area: 2×4, 3×3, 4×4 or 4×8 feet. Allow room for all containers to sit flat and make consistent contact with the mat.
Use containers with open or water-permeable bottoms that allow growing media to contact the capillary surface. Grassroots Bottomless Pots and 1-gallon non-woven nursery bags are options. Sealed-bottom containers are not suitable.
The Preset 5-inch sensor measures moisture in a container of growing media, which controls water delivery to the mat. Its reference marks simplify initial adjustment. The Surface Blumat senses moisture at the mat itself, can stay installed as trays change, and needs calibration after placement.
Yes. A dedicated container filled with growing media can act as the control container for the mat, even without a plant growing in it.
Yes. AquaMat can support seedlings, cuttings and vegetative plants in suitable trays or containers. The Surface Blumat is especially convenient for propagation areas where plants and trays change frequently.
Do not rely on the mat to rapidly restore severely dry or water-repellent growing media. Rewet gradually from above as needed, using a suitable wetting agent where appropriate, and establish good contact before depending on bottom-up watering.
Blumat sensors respond mechanically to moisture and do not require a timer or electricity. A pump-based water source may require power.
Often yes, if your existing system has a suitable water supply, 8mm line and adequate pressure and flow. Check compatibility and capacity before adding another mat.
Yes. A Surface Blumat can stay installed on the mat as containers change. With a Preset 5-inch sensor, you can use a dedicated control container or reinstall the sensor when needed.
Check that the mat is flat, that container bottoms contact it, that the growing media can absorb water, and that the water supply and sensor are operating correctly. Correct uneven contact or dry media before adjusting the sensor.
A suitably elevated gravity reservoir or regulated pressurized supply can work, provided the pressure and fittings are appropriate for your Blumat setup. Choose the water source and supply line separately.
Keep the mat and water supply free of debris and sediment. Inspect fittings for leaks, check that containers maintain contact, and clean the mat between crop cycles according to its material-care instructions.
Pick your AquaMat kit above, then add the containers and water supply that fit your growing space.
