Standard WATERMARK Soil Moisture Sensor. For use with all crops. To be used with WATERMARK Meter, Monitor, Voltage Adapter or a compatible device. Reads electrical resistance in 0-200 centibar (cb) and kilopascal (kPa) range. Comes standard with half inch stripped and tinned ends.

This sensor consists of a pair of highly corrosion resistant electrodes that are embedded within a granular matrix. A current is applied to the WATERMARK to obtain a resistance value. The WATERMARK Meter or Monitor correlates the resistance to centibars (cb) or kilopascals (kPa) of soil water tension. The WATERMARK is designed to be a permanent sensor, placed in the soil to be monitored and "read" as often as necessary with a portable or stationary device. Internally installed gypsum provides some buffering for the effect of salinity levels normally found in irrigated agricultural crops and landscapes.

Description
Assemble the coring tip onto the extension sections and the handle by screwing pieces together. Use as many extensions as necessary to make the tool the appropriate depth to position the sensor. Push the coring tool into the soil at the desired sensor location no more than one foot (30 cm) at a time to get to the desired depth. After each insertion of the tool, pull it back out and remove the soil core that has accumulated in the tip.
Never rotate the tool counter-clockwise while it is inserted in the ground as the pieces can become unscrewed.
Often it can be easier to push on the handle with your waist or knee to improve leverage. Footjacks and "backsaver" handles are available as options that can make installation easier. Once the hole has been made to the desired depth, the sensor can be inserted.
Be sure the sensor is firmly seated in the bottom of the hole and backfilled making sure the fill soil is compacted similarly to the surrounding area, as a false reading could be obtained if surface water wicks down through uncompacted soil.

The IRROMETER Model LT (Low Tension) was designed to operate in coarse sandy soils and non-soil growing media. With a range of 0-40 centibars (cb) or kilopascals (kPa), this instrument is for use in situations where tensions above 30 cb (kPa) are rarely expected. Gauge increments of 1 cb (kPa) provide a benefit where finer resolution near saturation is needed. This model instrument is also well suited for conditions where rapidly changing soil moisture conditions need to be observed. The "Quick-Flo" ceramic tip is colored blue for easy identification. <>Model LT IRROMETERS can be used for manual measurement and tracking of soil moisture status in coarse sandy soils and growing media. When equipped with optional electronic output and data logging equipment, measurement and tracking can be done automatically. The low tension vacuum gauge on this model can be replaced with electronic measurement options, or automatic switching devices which can activate peripheral equipment at desired soil water tension levels.
